Twenty new oils and a number of charcoal drawings are featured at the show entitled "Purgation of superfluities" at the Leyton Gallery in St. John's, NL. The title of the show comes from the famous quote by Michelangelo. The show runs from Sept. 1 to 24th with an opening reception from 3 to 5 on Saturday, September 10 (artist in attendance).
The slide show of selected paintings from the show will be posted soon.

An exhibition "Two painters: Louse Sutton and Iakov Afanassiev" opened on September 4th at the Leyton Gallery. I have eighteen works there ranging from figurative to landscape and still life.
The show will continue until October 3rd, 2009. Here are some images from this exhibition:

I had an opportunity to present my recent work in a talk at the Eastern Edge gallery. The event was called Fancy Artist talks where a diverse group of artists (visual, digital, installation, performance) talked about their experiences. The audience enjoyed cocktails designed to match artist's work. The cocktail for my talk was called Volga to reflect my Russian background. It was based on vodka and was quite strong. I was a bit afraid that after the cocktail I would loose the ability to speak English so I saved it until after the talk.

Landscape show at the Leyton gallery

The 'Landscapes' show is currently on at the Leyton gallery. I have a couple of new pieces there: 'Trail in Harbour Main' and 'Church in St. Phillips'. The show received a very nice review by Joan Sullivan at the Telegram (“Afanassiev crosses borders in Landscapes” by Joan Sullivan, the Telegram, 29 May, 2009).
The next show at the gallery is "Summer show" which opens on July 4.

My recent official commission was the portrait of Hon. Dr John C. Crosbie. The portrait was commissioned by the Memorial University of Newfoundland and was unveiled on Oct. 8, 2008.
